Have you ever tried to pray? Does it sometimes feel frustrating or ineffective?

When Jesus’ disciples had the chance to ask Him for one thing, they didn’t ask for miracles, wisdom, or power—they asked Him to teach them to pray. I guess prayer matter. – Roald

Let’s explore how Jesus thought about prayer. To begin, simply draw a hexagon…

Who Does Jesus Pray To?

It may seem basic, but it’s foundational: Jesus prays to the Father.

His starting point in prayer is always the character of our good Father. Immediately after teaching His disciples how to pray, Jesus emphasizes how God anticipates and provides for our needs (Matthew 6:25-34).

👉 Your Father is a good giver who delights in giving what we need most (Luke 11:11-13).

How does knowing God’s character change your perspective on prayer? Does it affect how you pray—or how you expect Him to respond?

Jesus Teaches Us to Pray for…

1️⃣ God’s Kingdom to Come

Jesus prays: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

How is God’s will done in heaven? Instantly. Perfectly. Without hesitation.

👉 Your Father isn’t just good—He’s the King whose will is always accomplished.

How does this shift your outlook on prayer? How might it change the way you pray?

2️⃣ Daily Provision

Jesus teaches us to trust God for everything—our physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.

👉 Do you truly trust God’s provision in your life? What holds you back from relying on Him?

3️⃣ Forgiveness

Jesus ties God’s forgiveness of us to our forgiveness of others.

He teaches that our willingness to forgive others is directly related to how we will be forgiven.

👉 What if God forgave you in the same measure that you forgive others?
👉 Who do you need to forgive right now?

4️⃣ Guidance & Protection

Jesus prays for wisdom to walk in God’s ways and strength to resist temptation.

But notice His focus—not just avoiding sin, but actively doing God’s work in the world.

👉 How does this compare to the way you pray?

How Does Jesus’ Prayer Compare to Yours?

There’s what we say we believe about God… and then there’s what our prayers reveal.

  • Do your prayers reflect trust in God’s character or fear and doubt?
  • Do your prayers only ask for circumstances to change, or do they also ask for your heart to be transformed?
  • Is your view of prayer aligned with God’s Kingdom, or does something need to change?

Questions for Reflection & Action

Which of the 6 sides do you focus on most? Which do you neglect?
How does Jesus’ example challenge your prayer habits?
When you pray, do you picture a good Father who is also the King?
Do your prayers seek to change your situation—or transform your character?
How do you pray for God’s Kingdom to break into our world?

Think of a person or situation that needs prayer. How can you pray for God’s Kingdom to advance in that need? Let’s practice together!

How Scripture Shapes Our Prayers

What Scriptures inform your prayers?

  • Do any come to mind right now?
  • What verses would be helpful to memorize and pray regularly?

Want help turning Scripture into prayer?

📖 Read & Ask:

  • What does this teach me about God?
  • If this is true of Him, what should be true of me?

🙏 Then Pray:

  • That your heart, mind, and will align with this truth.
  • That the Holy Spirit helps you live it out and reflect God’s character.

Next Steps for Growing in Prayer
