When Jesus saved you, He didn’t just call you to believe—He called you to build His Kingdom and serve others. – Roald

Every believer has a unique role to play. Do you know yours? Let’s explore how you can engage your personal calling. To begin, draw a pentagon

Understanding Our Callings

Ephesians 4:1-14 is a foundational passage for understanding how God calls each of us to serve. In it, we see five key roles that Jesus intends for His followers.

Each role uniquely contributes to the Church and advances God’s Kingdom.

The Five-Fold Ministry Roles

🛤️ Apostle – Pioneers new ground for God’s Kingdom.
🔍 Prophet – Brings clarity, identifies issues, and calls for change.
📣 Evangelist – Shares the Gospel and invites others in.
💙 Pastor (Shepherd) – Cares for and nurtures people.
📖 Teacher – Protects and passes on truth through clear instruction.

Each role serves a distinct purpose, yet all work together to strengthen the Church and expand the Kingdom.

Pioneers & Builders: Two Ways We Contribute

As you reflect on these roles, you may notice a pattern:

🌍 PIONEERS (Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist)

  • Focus on expansion—reaching new people, new places, and new expressions of ministry.
  • Push the Church forward and establish new ground.

🏗️ BUILDERS (Pastor, Teacher)

  • Focus on stability—deepening, strengthening, and protecting what has been established.
  • Ensure the Church remains healthy and grounded.

Both are vital. The Church needs pioneers to advance and builders to sustain.

What’s Your Calling? Questions for Reflection

  • Which of the five roles do you naturally lean toward? Which ones feel less natural?
  • Who do you admire in faith? What do you resonate with in how they serve?
  • Have you ever felt misaligned in ministry? What role did you gravitate toward instead?
  • When have you felt most effective in serving others? What have others affirmed in you?
  • Why do these tendencies shift at times?

Base vs. Phase: Understanding Your Role in Different Seasons

📍 Your “Base” – Your primary calling; where you operate best.
🔄 Your “Phase” – A temporary assignment; where you serve due to a unique need.

Sometimes, God calls us to serve in ways outside our natural strengths. We may feel stretched or even drained. That’s okay! We always return to our base after the phase ends.

Important: In every season, abide in Christ, operate from a place of rest, and refuel when needed.

Action Steps: Living Out Your Calling

💡 How has God designed you to contribute to His Kingdom?

  • Are you currently operating in that calling?
  • How can we create more opportunities for you to serve in alignment with your role?

Are you fully engaged in your responsibility to Christ’s Church?

  • What obstacles are preventing you from stepping fully into your role?
  • How can I support you in removing those obstacles?

📈 How can we ensure long-term growth?

  • If you’re thriving in your role, how can we maintain that momentum?
  • If you’re in a stretching phase, how can we ensure you remain healthy while growing?
  • Would it be helpful if I checked in, followed up, or connected you with someone?

👀 Imagine living fully in your calling.

  • How would the world around you change?
  • What do you hope would change within you?

Understanding Roles vs. Spiritual Gifts

🔹 Ephesians 4 describes roles—long-term ways we contribute to the Church.
🔹 Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12 describe spiritual gifts—abilities God gives us to serve.

Two Types of Gifts:
1️⃣ Motivational Gifts (Romans 12:6-8) – Natural gifts we use with ease and joy.
2️⃣ Manifestation Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:7-11) – Supernatural gifts the Holy Spirit activates as needed.

💡 How to Discover Your Role:

Starting the Conversation

Not sure how to talk about this with others? Try these approaches:

🔹 Ask: “How are you currently serving in the Church?”
🔹 Transition to the Pentagon: “God designed the Church to thrive when everyone serves according to their calling. Can I show you what I mean?”
🔹 For those struggling to find their place: “Did you know God gives every believer a ministry? Let me show you something…”
